Arsenal avenge a knockout in the Champions League
Spurs beat Arsenal 3-0 in May in a result that went a long way to ensuring Spurs beat their north London rival to qualify for the Champions League, but Arsenal got some measure of revenge on Saturday with a big win at the Emirates Stadium.
In doing so, Arsenal extended his stay at the top of the Premier League and dealt an early blow in the race between these two sides to prove their readiness to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the title. For the most part, they also avoided the same mistakes they lost to Manchester United in a similar type of game. They dominated the match for extended periods but lost to goals on the counterattack at Old Trafford while here, they were able to dictate terms for longer periods against Tottenham and totally deserved to win.
Conte’s counter-attack game plan faltered due to individual errors
The pattern of this match was expected from the start: Arsenal would control the ball and territory while Tottenham would seek to stay consistent, absorbing pressure and striking at the break. Spurs won many games without playing well this season, stayed in matches before his attacking talent came to the fore, and for a while it appeared to be the case here as Arsenal dominated the first half-hour before Gabriel landed a rare break-up. Richarlison in the box. Kane converted from the penalty spot but individual errors amounted to an undoing for Spurs.
Loris makes two mistakes in a matter of seconds and he’s pushing Bukayo SakaA tamed shot in the 49th minute was right in front of him and then allowed the loose ball to twist under him Clement Lenglet He struggled for purification, allowing Jesus to pressure. Royal was then sent off for his poor handling of Martinelli – more foolish than malicious – giving Arsenal the numerical advantage to see that comfortably. Regardless, Spurs may regret not being more adventurous earlier.
Kane has another personal feat, but are Spurs progressing enough?
Kane won’t feel comfortable given the result, but he became the first player ever to score 100 away goals in the Premier League with a penalty kick in the 31st minute that equalized Tottenham in the first half. He also cemented his impressive singles record against Arsenal, as he moved on to 14 goals – half of them on penalties – in 16 Premier League matches. However, this was one of the days when the distance between Kane’s personal accomplishments and Spurs’ prospects as a club felt uneasy.
The 29-year-old wants the silver medals now. He sought a move to Manchester City in pursuit of titles last summer but there was little talk of a departure this year as Pep Guardiola’s side signed him. Erling Haaland Instead, while Spurs made great strides forward under Antonio Conte. That progress must continue, or else speculation will quickly emerge as to whether the ambitious striker, who has already established himself as one of the Premier League’s top strikers, can truly achieve his ultimate goals at Spurs – and continuing links with Bayern Munich.

Best and worst performer
He finally scored from outside the box on the 65th attempt, but his all-around play enabled Arsenal to exercise a high level of control: 52 passes from 55 attempts before being substituted in the 73rd minute.
He was sent off for a reckless challenge on Martinelli and because he has been fortunate to play a lot this season, he let his teammates down in a big game.

“I think the first half was in the balance, and we had many chances to score,” Conte said. “We made a big mistake on the last pass because we had a lot of space. In the second half we conceded an early second goal and we could do a lot better.
With a red card, [went] the game. It was a really tough match after that. We had to change completely at that time. It was the referee’s decision and I don’t want to comment.
“We had the opportunity to make better use of it and to stay awake and I repeat that I think we made big mistakes on the last pass and with easy passes but it happens right after the national team it’s a bit difficult because the players are at a different point in time.
“Now we have to move on but we know our role in this league and we have to try and do our best to stay close to the other teams at the top. I tried to give minutes to the players because the game is over and also try to save energy.
“I especially wanted to give the players time [Oliver] Skipp and [Matt] Doherty because we need the whole team because we have a lot of games in a short space of time.”
