Man City advances with United by tricking Haaland and Foden

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City took a five-goal lead before a 6-3 victory over Manchester United’s derby on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland finished with three goals and made two, while Kevin De Bruyne made two of the Norwegian’s biggest goals. Haaland has now scored 14 goals in eight Premier League games, 18 more than the league record for a 38-game season set by Mohamed Salah in 2017-18.

Anthony had scored the game 4-1 after 56 minutes, but it was 6-1 before Anthony Martial hit two late goals off the bench.

Unbeaten champions Man City are one point behind Arsenal, eight points ahead of sixth-placed United. Manchester United played one game less.

What we learned from Manchester City and Manchester United

Erling Haaland’s pursuit of goals is real: Thirteen goals in eight games? truly?!? Erling Haaland is on fire, and every defense in the Premier League should be terrified. We spent an entire season wondering what Man City would look like last season with a player as a striker, and now we’ve found out it’s ridiculous.

Erich Ten Hag tied up his team: See, hindsight will always be 20:20. We got it, but expecting to play City away by fielding Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay at the heart of your midfield while leaving Fred and Casemiro on the bench was almost ridiculous. Eriksen’s defensive skills weren’t enough for the job and left McTominay running like crazy. The ball barely found its way to the front four, which is United’s only hope of hanging out with the hosts. Anthony’s stunning goal is a cruel hint of what could have been for the young ETH team.

Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne are unfair: This is the lesson. unfair.

Will the 2022-23 Manchester City team replace Barcelona in the 2008-09 season to be Pep’s masterpiece? It’s hard to imagine a better season than Barcelona’s double in the league and the Champions League. Barcelona were shocked on opening day but did not lose again until February 21. He didn’t lose a meaningful European match after a round of playoffs. Of his five league losses, four came after taking a 13-point lead in mid-February. Even scoring 105 goals, as well as 70 goals in La Liga doesn’t somehow change the idea that this city can be better than those marks. City are currently on track to score 133 goals and a near three-figure goal, although they have yet to play for Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea or Arsenal. It’s also a close second (laughing emoji).

Phil Foden’s reaction

“It’s a dream come true, and he played my derby as a City fan too. Erling and I built a connection, and we found each other.”

Erling Haaland’s reaction

Not bad,” Haaland told USA Network. “We scored six goals. What can you say? It’s amazing. It’s good to win at home and score six goals here.

“You can feel it all the time. You see the lanes we give to each other. We always want to go ahead and attack. In the end it’s amazing, there’s nothing else to say.”

Tactical focus

Rodri’s absence from Manchester City was threatening to open up United but midfield duo Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen were left rudderless by Erik ten Hag (see what we learned above). That left City a lot of freedom if they kept cool with the ball, which they characteristically did, and Raphael Varane’s exit means the guests are in for a lot of trouble.

Anthony Martial: Ask Eric ten Hag how pleased he was that Martial in the second half didn’t go through with the moves and instead provided a pair of goals to make the score line more palatable.

Anthony: The two ants carried more weight than they could, even though their team struggled.

Key storylines and star players

Despite two disappointing draws (Newcastle and Aston Villa), it was an unbeaten start to the 2022-23 season for Man City, who continues to lead the PL in possession (66.4 per cent per game) while also becoming an unstoppable attacking force of the past. Season (14 goals in the first seven games) until this season (23). This is not to say it has been easy as Manchester City are going through a tactical transformation of their own to better appeal to the poaching capabilities of the Norwegians. Although they have been forced to score multiple times already this season, the newfound spontaneity of a team that was like no other in the world was brought to light. Will that freedom be what will ultimately guide Pep Guardiola with his first Champions League title since 2011, and possibly a third PL title in a row (and fifth in six years)?

As for Manchester United, the era of Tin Hag was already a wild ride, as short as it was. Back-to-back defeats were one thing, but poor performance was the real cause of the resentment. While capturing the four straight wins, the Dutchman also settled on a midfield setup with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen working (effectively) in a double pivot with Bruno Fernandes the more advanced of the three. It brought defensive stability, of course, but more importantly, the change revealed a deadly counterattack offensive side. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Fernandez scored twice during the winning run, and new boy Anthony also joined in on the fun on his debut. With space in the back (and proper serving from the depths), Ten Hag might have his first winning formula (albeit not quite as much).
