Georgia-born Austin Hill claimed his second NASCAR Xfinity win of the season as he drove an eight-car train across the line at Atlanta Motor Speedway to launch a raucous celebration in front of the housemates on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Xfinity rookie is from Winston, a small town about an hour’s drive from the high-bank track he calls home.
After a pair of truckers finished second in Atlanta in 2020 and 21, and finished second behind Ty Gibbs in the Xfinity spring track race, Hill finally crossed the line first in the 1.54-mile trio.
Morning storms wiped out qualifying and practice, but Hill saw a lot of blue skies when he climbed onto a No. 21 Chevy in front of the main grandstand.
“I just won in Atlanta,” said Hill, who also won the season’s inaugural Xfinity race in Daytona. “This is very special. I have been trying to win here for a long time. I have finished second here three times in a row.”
Hill overcame a radio issue that prevented him from communicating with his crew. He changed helmets just before the green flag, to no avail, so he had to go through hand signals when he wanted to make adjustments
“He did a great job, and his Controller did a great job,” said car owner Richard Childress.
Hill was trailed by a group of seven cars – all within a second of the lead – in a frantic final round. But he never gave up the lead, pulling away a bit on the last lap as rivals battled for a position behind him.
“It was a rocket ship all day,” Hill said of his car. “I just needed to stay ahead and control the run.”
The winner crossed the streak 0.111 seconds ahead of Josh Perry. Ryan Truex, Tyler Riddick and Daniel Hemrick rounded out the top five in the championship.
After Perry’s win on the opening 40-lap stage, Hill signaled his strength by crossing the first stage at the 80-lap mark – a victory in the first stage of his Xfinity career.
Gibbs came in with four straight wins on the season. He started off the pole and was running hard, only to have his day come to an end after 93 laps when I pushed him off Riley Herbst sent him to the outside wall.
Toyota’s #54 wobbled with suspension damage, leaving Gibbs in 35th place which matches his worst of the season.
This was only the second time in 17 races that he had fallen out of the top 20.
“It’s been a tough race and he just got home on the wrong side of it,” said Gibbs, toning down the bold, outspoken style that had him at odds with so many drivers early in the season.
Nineteen-year-old Sam Mayer, the top-rated driver who did not win the Xfinity, cost himself a bullet in victory lane when he foolishly cut Jeffrey Earnhardt trying to squeeze into a row of cars in the outer lane.
It was the kind of blunder that hit Meyer a year ago.
“I thought it would be good,” he said. “It wasn’t. It’s my fault. I have to calm down and work together.”
